Page 2 of 2 | I might be more inclined to cut the movie some slack if it was Rumley’s first feature, but it isn’t: it’s his fourth. Hence the self-conscious camera angles and Mindless Self-Indulgence video-type editing during James’s episodes are what he thinks makes good filmmaking. As a corollary, I will point your attention to the short film included on the disc, Laughter. It seems like it must be a joke, an ironic comment on the stereotypical pretentious “arthouse” director. But it isn’t. It is dead-serious, which was very disturbing to me. It is a black-and-white short about a madman running around, clapping and singing and making people uncomfortable on the tube. It employs all manner of editing tricks and jarring score elements that are there ostensibly to counterpoint the action on screen, all of which adds up to an annoying ten minutes of “what the fuck?” The quality of my life would improve greatly if I could go back in time and not watch that thing |
The other special features on the disc include what are called deleted scenes, but are really mostly deleted shots. Only one actual scene is included, and is interesting, and the rest were a giant waste of my time. The almost 30-minute making of piece bored me to sleep twice, at which point I gave up.
The end result is, this is a decent movie that falls apart in the crunch, and the special feature component is shabby at best. The actors are brilliant and fearless, but are ultimately left hanging by the poor script. Rent it before you buy it. I have read various reviews in which people have enjoyed it, so who knows, maybe I just didn’t get it. Feel free to email me with your rebuttals, if you so choose.
